Nowadays, computers dominate the school campuses, universities and other institutions. With the advancement of technology, problems such as disposal management of these devices and increase in energy consumption arises. Students buy the latest PC's, large monitors, laptops, diskettes, USB and other computer related devices, yet none of them has the knowledge on how to properly use or dispose of these gadgets. Ironically, a lot of us can use these devices well, some are even called as experts , yet we know use them properly or should I say "practically" . Even the right disposal of these devices are an enigma to people. As a result, there is now a dramatic increase of energy being wasted on such obtuse reasons and the worn out gadgets can be seen piled up beside the dumpsters.

True, we may not fully solve this problem because the solution will limit our use of such resources, but we can surely lessen it. And it starts with yourself. Be an energy educator and remind your friends and colleagues to save energy by changing their computer habits. Circulate this knowledge in your home and campuses.

In campuses, I suggest that the schools educate their students and colleagues on how to use these devices in a practical perspective. Make it a part of the students lessons and practices. And the schools or universities should put these methods into action in their own campuses not only for their own benefit but also to serve as an example to their pupils, faculty and staff.

Ways to use your computers practically:
1. turn off computers when not needed
2. use blank screen savers
3. recycle printer toner and ink jet cartridges and batteries
4. buy a monitor only as big as you really need it
5. reuse used-diskettes
6. recycle used-papers as drafts
7. search sites that focus on Green Campus Computing for other information.

green campus computing should be promoted not only in campuses but also in other institutions like companies, and even at home. By doing so, even in our little ways we can help our planet and conserve energy without totally diminishing the idea of using computers and other devices.
